2 widget request

Postby dsim87 on Sun Oct 21, 2007 6:58 pm

Sarah could you let me know if you think you will have time to do a UVA schedule for football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse in one and a washington nationals widget?

If not is there a good how-to to make them and keep them looking like your style of widget?

I am considering doing an MLB widget, but I probably won't make a formal decision until it gets closer to the next season. I do not have time to do your UVA widget, since what you are asking for is different than my usual style.

The maintenance of my existing widgets has become quite a chore. My widgets don't use data provided by an XML feed, which would have a standard, easy-to-process format. Instead, I parse the schedule information from various HTML pages. These pages are on sites I don't control, and frequently these websites change their layout. Every time their layout changes, my widgets break, and I need to modify my code. Also, when the Yahoo! Widgets team releases a new version of the engine, which usually occurs or twice once a year, I modify my widgets to take advantage of the newer features available and fix things that broke because of their changes. And since Yahoo! Widgets is cross-platform, I test my widgets on both Windows XP and Mac OSX.

The software life cycle for my widgets never ends. Consequently, I have cut way back on widget creation and have no plans to create any new widgets (other than college or NBA widgets in my existing style) that I won't use.

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh!

If you want baseball and lacrosse included in the UVA widget, you will need to scrape virginiasports.com for that information. I had started doing something similar with the UF All-Sport Widget, but I never finished; I lost interest, and it's been in beta for the past 2 years. I can email you that widget code if you want. It should help you get started.

There are tutorials/guides to widget-making here:

I would also like to voice my support for an MLB widget, maybe it could be made similar to the NHL/NFL Team Schedule widgets. That would be great if you can (or decide to) get around to it.
