READ ME: Hints for requesting widget

Postby Sarah on Sun Oct 30, 2005 4:09 am

Please start your own thread for a new widget request. Or, just add your votes/opinions to an existing thread for a widget request. I've recently decided that it's easier for me to track widget requests if they are each in their own thread than in this thread.

Aside from the Redskins and Georgia Tech, I'm not really a sports fan. If you are asking me to do a sports widget, don't just tell me your team name or nickname. I'm not going to have the faintest idea what you're talking about.

For sports widgets, I would like the following information. 1 and 2 are required; the rest are optional.

    1. REQUIRED: The full name of the school. If it's a widget for a pro team, give me the name of the city and the team.

    2. REQUIRED: The URL for the "official" sports site. For Georgia Tech, this site is "http://ramblinwreck.collegesports.com/". I use this URL in the context menu (right-click on the widget to view this menu) to allow the user to quickly "jump" to the official sports site for more information. I also use this site to help me choose colors. And since I'm not really a sports fan, I can easily mix up teams. Sending me the link to the official site will prevent confusion on my end.

    3. OPTIONAL: The text you'd like for the "title line" in the widget. The title line is the line that appears above the schedule grid. For the GT widget, this line is "Georgia Tech '05 Football" (subsituting in appropriate year and sport). If you don't tell me what to use, I'll probably use the school name (for college widgets) or team name (for pro widgets).

    4. OPTIONAL: Your preferred row background color. I don't need the Pantone or HTML colors (altho they are nice to have). You can just give me a plain description (e.g. pale yellow, bright blue, sunburst orange), and if that color appears in the logo, I will use that shade. If the color doesn't appear in the logo, then I will try to match it to a shade used on the official team site (see #2). If you don't tell me the row color to use, I'll choose what I think looks best.

    5. OPTIONAL: Your preferred colors for "home game", "away game", "header", and "title" text color. I don't need Pantone or HTML color codes, plain descriptions (e.g. red, light blue, dark green) are fine; I'll choose a variant on the shade that looks best with the other colors. If you don't tell me what to use, I'm going to choose what I think looks best.

    6. OPTIONAL: The logo you would like me to use. You don't need to send me the image file; just point me to a page that displays this logo. If you don't tell me what logo to use, I will use the logo displayed by ESPN for that particular team.

Feel free to also request a non-sports widget, although I currently have no hints for that :-).

University of Georgia widget

Postby jimwebb9 on Thu Dec 22, 2005 9:55 pm

Fonts. The official font used in the University logo system is Galliard. Galliard roman, italic and bold are the variants used.

Official colors. The printer's specification for the color logo system is Pantone 200 (red) and Pantone 422 (silver gray) and 100% black or 50% black.

In cases where a separate Pantone ink cannot be used, but four-color printing is available, it is possible to simulate Pantone 200 using this formula:
• Red: 0% cyan, 100% magenta, 70% yellow, and 10% black.
• Silver Gray: 50% black

For Web sites, it is possible to use red: #990000 and Gray: #CCCCCC, #333333, #666666, #999999

That should clear up the color issue.

This request is for a University of Georgia widget, similar to the one you did for Georgia Tech, with the same layout and options. I leave to you the artistic parts- but do you need a link to a logo? I suspect you may have better sources than I do...

I would also like a widget done for Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, info to follow: http://www.eng.auburn.edu/admin/marketi ... olors.html since I'm over my head in color use. I believe the logo is available there too

If I've not provided enogh information just ask and I'll hunt it down.

BTW, why don't you have a Tip Jar? You shouldn't be doing this for free... </libertarian>

Sports sites? http://www.secsports.com comes to mind but I'll look...

Is this enough?

Well, since I went to Georgia Tech, I'm gonna have to think twice about doing a widget for UGA  Or perhaps I will add some code to randomly pop up a window that says "To hell with Georgia!" (kidding ... I think)

There is a UGA football widget by Kevin Lester in the Gallery. It's here: http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=36937

If I do make a UGA widget, I wouldn't feel comfortable submitting it to the Gallery since I feel that might be a wee bit rude of me. Words were exchanged (nothing super-mean, lol, just general smack talk) in the Gallery (via widget comments, which have since been deleted by the mod) between the GT/UGA folks when our respective widgets were posted. I'm afraid if I post a UGA widget, the comments will turn mean and/or Kevin will be annoyed.

However, if you still want me to make a UGA widget (after you look at Kevin's), I would certainly put the widget on this site.

do you need a link to a logo? I suspect you may have better sources than I do...

When I do a new widget, I look at the logo displayed by ESPN, and then go to Chris Creamer's site (http://www.sportslogos.net/Site/index.php) to find a match. If he doesn't have a match, I search elsewhere, and usually end up lifting ithe logo from the school athletic site.

However, in some cases people want an alternate logo used instead of what ESPN considers to be the primary logo. If you want a logo used that differs from the logo displayed on ESPN, then you need to let me know and send me to a page that displays the logo. I can take it from there. I'll update my "hints" post to reflect this information.

I would also like a widget done for Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, info to follow: http://www.eng.auburn.edu/admin/marketi ... olors.html since I'm over my head in color use. I believe the logo is available there too

I don't need the Pantone colors; just the simple English description of the color will suffice. For UGA, saying "red" for the rows would be fine. I'll match the red in the row to the red in the logo.

BTW, why don't you have a Tip Jar? You shouldn't be doing this for free... </libertarian>

Yes, haha, I am in the process of signing up for a PayPal account and throwing up a little "donate" sign. I had no idea this was going to be so time consuming.

Sports sites? http://www.secsports.com comes to mind but I'll look...

By "official sports site", I meant the site for the school. For example, the official site for GT athletics is http://ramblinwreck.collegesports.com/.

The official site for UGA is: http://georgiadogs.collegesports.com/.

Ideally, you would also send me the the links for Auburn University, Auburn, and Alabama. Sometimes I get confused by school names, so giving me the link to the official site can prevent errors on my end. Also, I use the colors on the official sites to help me with my color scheme.

And this URL is used in the context menu so that people can easily visit their main athletic site. Right-clicking on the widget and then selecting "Visit ..." from the pop-up menu (aka context menu) will take you to this site.

Cheers,
Sarah

UGA and Auburn widgets

Postby jimwebb9 on Fri Dec 23, 2005 10:44 am

Actually if you would do an UGA widget I'd appreciate it; yours are much better done than his. For Auburn, go to http://auburntigers.collegesports.com/ - I think that's what you're looking for...

...and get that PayPal button up! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would throw some cash your way for these fine widgets...

Heh

Postby jimwebb9 on Fri Dec 23, 2005 10:47 am

Oh and by the way, I went to Tech and both of my sisters went to UGA, I'm used to strife and dissension. Living here in Alabama though, I can tell you you have NO IDEA how bad that can get- I swear after the last Iron Bowl (Auburn-Alabama game) I literally thought there was going to be open warfare. These folk around here take it VERY seriously.
