Description
If you want a college football Wordpress widget for your blog (and I know some of you do, based on some emails I've received), this one by Alvin Kretiman is overflowing with awesome2.
- Day/Date
- Opponent
- Time the game will be broadcast, or the outcome of the game
- Record
- TV
This widget also displays standings, the Sirius college game schedule for the current day or the next day games are played, and the XM college schedule for the upcoming games in the selected conference.
- Team
- Conference W-L
- Team W-L
In Standings view, the next and previous buttons in the title line will cycle through all the conferences. You may also jump directly to a conference from the "Jump to Conference >> Conference Name" context menu item, which is accessed via right-clicking (Windows) or CTRL-clicking (Mac) on the widget. This menu item is only available when you are viewing the standings.
- Game
- Time the game will be broadcast
- Away Stream
- Home Stream
- Date
- Game
- Pre-Game
- Time the game will be broadcast
- Channel
Since the college games are not broadcast over Sirius Internet Radio, I did not integrate this widget with the Sirius widget.
The dock will display the record (conference record + "/" + overall record) for the selected sport for the current season, even if you're viewing data for a past year.
The sport (football, men's basketball, or women's basketball) can be chosen from the context menu, which is accessed via right-clicking (Windows) or CTRL-clicking (Mac) on the widget, or the Preferences window. In "football" view, the entire schedule for the selected season is displayed. In "basketball" view, the schedule is displayed by month, and the next and previous buttons will cycle through the months available (November through March). When the widget loads, the month displayed will be set to the current month.
Schedule will update as times and scores become available. By default, data is refreshed when the widget is loaded, when you select "Refresh" from the context menu, and when you save your Preferences. You may also, via the Preferences, set the data to refresh when the schedule is maximized.
From the context menu, which is accessed via right-clicking (Windows) or CTRL-clicking (Mac) on the widget, the display can be toggled between the schedule/results and conference standings. When viewing conference standings, there are only 3 columns and all columns are displayed.
You may also choose the year for which to display schedule or conference information. In basketball view, entering a year of 2005 will retrieve data for the 2005-06 season, and entering a year of 2004 will retrieve data for the 2004-05 season. Currently, there is information for 2002-2005.
Prior to version 4.0 of Yahoo! Widgets, you coud make two copies of the widget and set one to display the 2004 schedule, and one to display the 2005 schedule. A bug in 4.0 of Yahoo! Widgets prevents this copy technique from working properly under Windows, and Preferences for each copy won't be saved properly.
If you are in "football" view, you can use the next and previous buttons to cycle through the years. If you are in "basketball" view, the next and previous buttons cycle through the months. These buttons are hidden until the mouse rolls over the widget, so if you're wondering where they are, move your mouse over the schedule and look in the lower left (or right, depending on your logo location) of the widget.
USA Today/Coaches, AP, and BCS ranks may also be displayed for the current season only. BCS ranks, obviously, are only displayed for football.
Data is scraped from ESPN.
Columns displayed and background opacity are configurable.
Logo position and size (starting with version 2.3) are configurable. The logo can be placed at any of the corners, allowing you to align the widget against any edge of the screen.
Double-click the logo to minimize or expand the schedule. You may also click on the minus and plus images to minimize or expand the schedule.
Hovering over the logo will display the "Last Updated" time in a tooltip.
Time zone is configurable. Options include: Eastern Time (default), Central Time (Eastern Time - 1 hr), Mountain Time (Eastern Time - 2 hrs), Pacific Time (Eastern Time - 3 hrs), Alaska Time (Eastern Time - 4 hrs), and Hawaii-Aleutian Time (Eastern Time - 5 hrs). The time zone feature is geared towards U.S. time zones. Since I doubt people outside the US will run a widget that shows U.S. TV stations for an American sport, I have no plans to expand this functionality.
From the Preferences window, you can tell the widget to check for a newer version on startup. You can also check for updates by selecting "Check for newer version" from the context menu.
Notes
Since it scrapes data from a live web page, this widget will break if that web page changes its format. I'm, uh, not really a sports fan. With the exception of my Georgia Tech and Redskins widgets, I don't run any of my sports widgets. If something is broken, please contact me and I will attempt to fix it.
Thanks
- To the fine people behind www.ajaxload.info, which I used to generate the new (well, new in August 2007) "loading" graphic that is optionally displayed when data is being retrieved
- To Marc Oburg for his idea about the conference standings functionality
- To JT and Edward Galarza for beta testing
- To Chris Creamer and his totally fabulous sportslogos.net site. And thanks to everyone who uploaded a logo to his site.
- To Dennis Blackburn for providing the initial USF and Temple graphics

- Well, perhaps not overflowing with awesome, but it is pretty cool. For those of you that didn't get this reference, you don't watch enough tv.
